This course introduces you to the basic principles of physical metallurgy, and the relationships between processing and microstructure, and then microstructure and properties. It focuses on cast and homogenised microstructures, starting with the microscopy tools required to understand the microstructures. The course first investigates the basic phenomena of nucleation (homogeneous and heterogeneous), dendritic growth, partitioning and intermetallic formation during casting. It then looks at the response of those microstructural features to the thermal exposure of homogenisation, before finishing with some specific examples of the relationships between process and structure, and structure-properties.
