Aluminium Scrap Recycling & Melting Furnaces (February 2025)
Tuesday 4th February 2025, starting at 14:00 (UK time), and weekly until 11th March 2025
This course comprises 6 weekly sessions, covering scrap processing, melting practices and dross processing. The course includes coated scrap processing, key melting metrics (metal rate, melt loss and energy efficiency), as well as the causes of dross formation, and the options for dross processing. Each session will consist of a seminar, and an associated workshop.
The course can be attended as a standalone course, or seen as the first in a trilogy of related courses. It will be followed later in 2025 by Molten Metal Treatment, and then DC Casting.

Course Agenda
- Development of remelts and recycling practices
- Melting fundamentals: melt rate, efficiency and emissions
- Melting fundamentals: melt loss and dross
- Decoating: science and technologies
- Alloying and OES
- Sorting and handling aluminium scrap
Each session lasts typically 2 hours. Following the seminar, attendees are left with a workshop to tackle in their own time before the start of the next session. The subsequent session starts with an interactive review of the previous week's workshop.
